Public Hotel
Contemporary

NEIGHBORHOOD: East Village

Travel Time to Tennis: Approximately 25 minutes via car or subway

Set alongside the historic tenements of the Lower East Side, Public is an altogether new type of luxury hotel. The idea – the latest brainchild of revolutionary hotelier Ian Schrager – is to provide everything you want, but none of the unnecessary extras. So, you have to check-in yourself and arrange your own mints on the pillow, but there’s plenty of upsides too. New York-inspired dishes are wood-fired at superchef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Public Kitchen, while Louis – a market/canteen hybrid – serves organic slow food, fast. Every room has floor-to-ceiling windows and ooh-that’s-clever mod cons, but for the best view of the city head to the Roof Bar – nothing beats a Manhattan above Manhattan.

All-Access 9/11 Experience: Ground Zero Tour, 9/11 Memorial and Museum, One World Observatory

In remembrance of the events that took place on September 11, 2001, take this guided, 90-minute tour of Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial. Walk through the space of the former World Trade Center in New York City, and get a deeper understanding of the events that took place on that day. Your ticket also includes access to the 9/11 Museum, as well as the One World Observatory for panoramic views of the city. Highlights Tour Ground Zero and the National September 11 Memorial Walk where the former World Trade Center once stood Hear stories of tragedy and heroism Select from a morning or afternoon departure time What You Can Expect Observatory In remembrance of September 11, 2001, this walking tour takes you through the former World Trade Center in New York City, where the events of 9/11 took place. You'll be guided by New Yorkers who have connections to that day, listening to their personal stories and touching accounts of the heroism of many others. Ground Zero Your tour starts at St. Paul's Chapel, the oldest public building in NYC still in continuous use, which miraculously survived the falling debris from the 9/11 attacks despite being one block away. It became a makeshift rescue center during the aftermath, and its iron fence became a bulletin board where family members posted notices of missing loved ones. Today, with the mementos received from people around the world supporting New York, the church serves as a tribute. As you continue to the Firefighter's 9/11 Memorial Wall, hear the heroic stories of the emergency responders, and see the Engine and Ladder Company 10/10, the fire station at Ground Zero. 9/11 Memorial Enter the 9/11 Memorial, where you can pay your respects to those who lost their lives in the World Trade Center. See the Reflecting Absence Memorial, the man-made waterfall inside the memorial, symbolizing the vast void left by the tragedy. Read the names of the nearly 3,000 victims placed around the waterfall next to their friends, family members, and colleagues, and see the new World Trade Center rise from the ground. At the conclusion of your tour, your guide provides you with a timed entry ticket to minimize your wait time at the museum, which you'll enter first, followed by the observatory. 9/11 Museum Your museum entry time is about 12 pm for the 10:30 am tour or 3:30 pm for the 2 pm tour (select your preferred tour time when booking), but this can vary depending on availability. Your guide gives you a preview of the museum and what to expect so you can optimize your time spent inside and not miss seeing things important to you. Your visit is self-guided, so you'll explore at your own pace to see artifacts from the attacks and hear recordings from people who were there that day. One World Observatory After leaving the museum, head to One World Trade Center, named Freedom Tower, to visit the One World Observatory. This panoramic observation deck is a marvel of engineering and architecture. The program begins in the lobby with 'Voices,' a film dedicated to the men and women of the towers. Then take the Sky Pod elevator, which rises 1,250 feet in less than 60 seconds. Immersive LED displays, interactive touch-screen video, and dining options give you plenty to experience, but the true draw is the view as you stand hundreds of feet above the New York City skyline stretching across all of Manhattan. Your observatory entry time is after your museum visit: typically 2 pm for the 10:30 am tour or 5:30 pm for the 2 pm tour.

Most of the tour will require a good deal of walking, however, because the tours are exclusive to your group, you can and will go at a pace that you are comfortable with. There may be occasions when you will need to go from one part of NYC to another (Times Square to the Brooklyn Bridge). The most efficient way to travel is by subway ($2.50 per person, per ride). If you prefer a cab this can be arranged (no more than 4 people to a cab). The cost will be at the expense of the group, usually about $10 - $15 from most points within Manhattan. If you do take a subway ride, this will be documented as part of the New York City experience. What is the difference between the 2 and 3 hour tours? Both tours are a wonderful opportunity to orient yourself to the city and experience many of Manhattan's attractions in a short period of time. A typical 2-hour tour will allow photos in areas such as Times Square, Central Park, The Brooklyn Bridge and, time permitting, one other location such as SoHo or Grand Central Terminal. The 3-hour tour will allow us to cover the aforementioned areas as well as more of the neighborhoods of NYC. We will take as many photos as possible on both tours. How will I receive my photos? A CD containing all your photos will be delivered to your hotel within 48 hours after the tour OR your guide can email you a gallery, so photos can easily be viewed, shared and downloaded.
